About Us Overview

babyIn May, 2015, the Mendocino County Grand Jury issued a report entitled “Children at Risk,” which investigated the performance of Mendocino County Family and Children’s Services (FCS)—the County’s child protective services agency. The report found myriad deficiencies within the agency and concluded that the current state of affairs is leaving “children in harm’s way” and is “a disaster waiting to happen.”

FIRST 5 Mendocino believes that while the work of protecting children is extremely difficult and the staff at FCS is committed and well intentioned, fundamental reforms within the department are imperative. We offer our response in a spirit of support to build on the Grand Jury report and to reinforce the urgent need to protect and support young children in Mendocino County.
