School Readiness Backpacks

If you have spent time with a kindergartener within the last year, it is likely that you have experienced some results of the Mendocino County Office of Education (MCOE) School Readiness program, a project designed to ensure that all Mendocino County preschool-aged children have the necessary tools to become confident life long learners, and that parents are recognized as their child’s first teachers.

Distribution of School Readiness backpacks is just one of the many projects in place to put learning activities into the hands of our future scholars. Four Parent Advocates also work in preschools and family child care homes in the Hopland, Willits, South Ukiah and Covelo communities to link parents and providers to resources designed to enhance a child’s development. School Readiness encompasses activities as diverse as providing Ages and Stages Questionnaires to all families of children aged 0-5 in Covelo, and providing reading time at the Ukiah Public Library. The School Readiness Program is proud to be in its second cycle of funding, and focuses on activities and experiences that encourage early brain development, success in school, and promote awareness of child development in the community. Current research supports the stimulation of cognitive, physical and social-emotional skills during critical learning stages of children 0-5 years.

This project is made possible through FIRST 5 Mendocino, First 5 California, AmeriCorps/VISTA program, and is implemented by MCOE’s Child Development Division.School Readiness constantly evolves in order to maintain effectiveness in the ever-changing world of education. Developmental profiles for kindergartners keep the program current on community needs, and are used to determine the activities that might be most helpful for enhancing a child’s school readiness.
